Google ATAP

"Soli"

Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP) is a skunkworks team and in-house technology incubator, created by former DARPA director Regina Dugan. ATAP is similar to X, but works on projects, granting project leaders time—previously only two years—in which to move a project from concept to proven product. According to Dugan, the ideal ATAP project combines technology and science, requires a certain amount of novel research, and creates a marketable product. Historically, the ATAP team was born at Motorola and kept when Google sold Motorola to Lenovo; for this reason, ATAP ideas have tended to involve mobile hardware technology.

The team embodies principles that former Google VP Dugan used at DARPA. One of these principles is to create small teams of high performers. Another is to make use of resources outside the organizational box; ATAP has worked with hundreds of partners in more than twenty countries, including schools, corporations, startups, governments, and nonprofits. Standing contracts are in place with a number of top-flight schools, such as Stanford, MIT, and Caltech, to facilitate rapid research arrangements when needed.

It is an Interactive sensor chip, which can easily measure the motion of the object movement. This Technology would make a great revolutionary on mobile and latest devices(gadgets). It has been introduced by Google ATAP team. And named this project as "SOLI".

Soli is a miniature radar that understands human motions at various scales: from the tap of your finger to the movements of your body.

Soli

It is an upcoming project which would be released on 2027. The Google ATAP team were optimising more features on it.

Their goal is to make relationships with technology more human. As humans, we understand each other intuitively, often without saying a single word. When you walk behind someone, they hold the door open for you. When you reach for something, they hand it to you. And when you happily raise your hand towards a friend, they reciprocate with a high five.

Being able to understand each other without words heightens our ability to connect, communicate and go about our lives with ease. What if we could experience a similar ease of connection and communication when we interact with technology?

Soli aims to understand the nuances of human movements so that we can use our natural body language and gestures as a form of input. We created an interaction framework that groups human movements according to levels of proximity and engagement between the user and Soli: aware, engaged and active. The framework is based on regular human nonverbal communication models.

Features:-

  • Soli understands movement from all angles.
  • Low power consumption.
  • Smart detection: Soli detects objects and motions through various materials for seamless interaction.
  • Privacy: Soli is not a camera and doesn't capture any visual images.
